and so it continues

Friday proved to be no different than Thursday. At 10:30 I got a phone call from the school asking me to come and pick Lil' Man up.

I am at a loss at to what to do.

He is in a regular ed class.

Which has 18 kids and two teachers

He gets 1 hour of one on one

He gets speech, occupational, and physical therapy.

We have a behavior plan, which isnt working.

Some days are great, some days are so so, but when they get bad he cant seem to shake it.

I spoke with the special ed teacher again on Friday, she doesn't think her class is the place for him.

There is a separate school for children with emotional/behavioral problems.  But in all honesty I don't think thats the place for him.

Can you imagine the type of shit he would pick up there? He totally copies everything, and everyone.

He started sucking his thumb because a kid in his class does.

I think whoever adopts him should be very open to home schooling.  Whenever we have him at home for breaks.  life if good.

He needs constant one on one attention.

I am going to meet with the IEP team again tomorrow.

  1. They CANNOT keep calling you and asking you to pick him up. Every child, regardless of emotional/behavioral issues has a right to free and public education. Make sure the Behavior Specialist is there. Demand that she/he continue tweaking or re-writing a behavior plan until IT WORKS! Suggest that he get breaks FREQUENTLY to reward him with motivating activities. Tell them that you want a qualified one on one assistant to start working with him. And lastly suggest that his teachers read the book called "The Explosive Child." I am the Behavior Specialist for the school district I work for and Lil' man's school is DRIVING ME NUTS! They should be able to have a handle on him by now. It's January!! Ugh. Good Luck and let me know if I can help. shags3600@hotmail.com

  2. I reached a point with my son where I refused to come pick him up unless it was a medical emergency. It forced the school to deal with him. While it only last for a few months (I ended up homeschooling) I would put it back into their court. I told them that if he had behavior problems at school with them, then they had to enact their own consequences at school just like I did when there were problems at home. It sounds like his school is not even trying to help Lil' Man. Sad!

  3. They can't keep bouncing him for his disability. Gently, but firmly remind them of that when they call for you to come get him, it is denying Lil' Man the opportunity to access a public education because of his disability. Reassure the school that you'll be there to pick him up in 20 minutes, but first you need to call your lawyer. That might slow their roll and get Lil Man apropriate services. Good Luck.

  5. I agree with Mama D2 and De, they cannot keep asking you to solve their problem. Let them know that you are willign to support them in whatever way you can, perhaps even speak to lil man onthe phone to reassure him that you will be there at the end of the day but he is their responsibility and they need to figure it out.

  6. Definitely praying for a solution to this problem! Is he any closer to having a forever family? I would definitely suggest homeschooling to them as well because for some kids it's just a better environment for learning(I homeschool too!)
