  6. So glad you got a rest. It sure does make a difference to get a break every once in a while. Parenting hurt children is so exhausting and trying. Good for you.

  12. How often you check Prolactin levels depends. The most common side effect of risperdal is weight gain and after 2 years on 1 mg a day, the weight gain was significant. We cut the risperdal down to 1/2 mg a day (at night) and added lithium and that held us for another year. Almost 2 weeks ago, GB complained her nipples were sore. Last weekend she started with a bloody discharge from both nipples, so Monday I took her for a blood test to check the Prolactin level. It is high enough that she is at risk for developing a tumor (I think of the pituitary gland) so, reluctantly I had to take her off. The risperdal works so well, I have no idea what I will replace it with- probably at least 2 drugs- one for sleeping and an antipsychotic. Besides the FASD, she was diagnosed 3 years ago with Bipolar I, with psychotic features. With boys, I tend to be more careful- if they develop breast buds, which is a common side effect, I get their Prolactin levels checked every 3 months.
